How to best learn for the Salesforce Certification Exam

Haven’t we all been struggling with the big ‘HOW’ since school? Questions like: How do I learn? How do I memorize all this? There’s no one-fits-all solution but let me give you a few hot tips that have been proven to help most of my Salesforce students.

Since there is a lot of content to work through, having a list of all the topics to keep an eye on, can be a real lifesaver. You don’t want to be missing any topics that may bring you a lot of points in your exam results. In this third of my eight-part certification guide, I will explain how you can learn all these topics in a structured way and how to split them out in bite-size chunks to give your brain time to absorb and memorize.

Learning in a structured environment

Use a Study Checklist

Every time I studied for a Salesforce certification, I kept a close eye on the exam outline to make sure I’m not missing any topics. So I’ve pretty much used it as a checklist, that I went back to regularly and marked the topics I had studied already and that I felt confident with.

Since the Trailhead Exam Guide doesn’t allow you to tick anything off, I’ve put together a Study Checklist with a complete list of all exam topics. You can print it out if you prefer, tick it off as you go and even add additional notes that help you with your studies.

HOT TIP: Avoid Salesforce Exam Dumps

You may come across Websites or Facebook Groups pretending to be Salesforce Training providers that offer complete Exam Dumps for free or for a small fee. These are not legal! Even if you do consider making use of them, any smart future employer will find out quickly that you have been cheating and your chances to find a job in the Salesforce Job Market will decrease significantly.

Follow a Structured Training Curriculum

Now that you have the list of topics, how do you actually go about learning them all? By stamping blindly through the Trailhead platform and finding the related learning modules. Just kidding.

I have created a comprehensive Trailmix “WeLearnSalesforce – Salesforce Administrator Credential” for you on Trailhead. It includes quizzes and hands-on challenges or projects for each exam topic.

TRAILHEAD Trailmix by Peggy Schael

Learn the fundamental Salesforce functionalities. This Trailmix is for everyone. Come visit us at https://www.welearnsalesforce.com
Source: https://trailhead.salesforce.com/users/pedev/trailmixes/welearnsalesforce-admin

It is based on the official Trailmix provided by Trailhead which is included in the official exam guide. However, I have added my own version of it. Why? Since I used to work closely with the Trailhead Academy as a Certified Salesforce Instructor for over 4 years, I know the contents really well and know what’s missing. So I’ve added a few more items to fill those gaps. I have also changed the order of the learning modules a little bit to make sure you get a more logical and therefore better learning experience.

This means you will learn each topic in chronological order building up your knowledge as you proceed. Some exam topics require prior knowledge of another topic, so I’ve structured the contents accordingly.

Join a formal Training Course

Everyone has a different learning style. From my experience in training thousands of students, I’ve realized that most students prefer to learn in a structured environment, with visual representation and guided hands-on exercises. I had a number of students join my trainings who initially started learning solely on Trailhead and found themselves lost.

In conjunction with the Trailmix I have set up for you, me and my team have created a Salesforce Video Learning Platform WeLearnSalesforce. It’s an online on-demand platform, giving you the freedom to choose a time and pace that suits your personal and business lifestyle. And since it’s all online, you can access our courses from any device such as your desktop, laptop or tablet, as long as it has an internet connection and an internet browser, e.g. Safari, Chrome, Firefox.

Followed by Salesforce system demos and most importantly plenty of hands-on exercises.

Uncover the Secrets of successfully learning Salesforce

Practice Practice Practice

It’s all about Practice! You will hear me say this a lot. You can only get better with hands-on experience. It’s the key to your learning success and will help you ease your way through the exam you are preparing for.

HOT TIP: Don’t Learn By Heart

If you simply memorize the learning concepts without actually understanding the Why behind it, you will not only struggle in the exam. You will also struggle in your job when it comes to proving credible solutions.

There are aspects to the capabilities of the Salesforce platform that you will indeed need to learn by heart. This primarily includes platform limitations or license type limitations etc.

EXAMPLE:

KNOWLEDGE QUESTION (learn by heart)

How many components can be added to a Dashboard?

A) 10

B) 20

C) 50

The correct answer is B. You simply have to learn this by heart, there is no real logic behind it. The only reason might be that more than 20 becomes really hard to view, but Salesforce wouldn’t limit this if it was technically possible to add more than 20.

COMPREHENSION QUESTION (requires an understanding of context)

What are the results of deactivating a user instead of freezing?

A) Frees up a license

B) Does not remove from sharing privileges

C) Removes from Team Sharing if required

D) None of the above

The correct answers are A and C. There is a lot of logic behind these features. Deactivation is meant to be a permanent decision, e.g. when a user leaves the organization. So you would want to re-allocate the license you are paying for to someone else. Team Sharing will also be impacted. If the deactivated User would still appear as a team member, this can lead to confusion. Freezing on the other hand is a temporary solution, e.g. when running data imports or deployments.

Take Your Time

Don’t try to learn all at once. There is a lot of content to absorb and to get familiar with so it will take some time. You’ll need a bare minimum of three months, better six or more, especially when you are very new to Salesforce. Some topics are easier than others. Therefore you’ll notice that you may need to practice the trickier topics more than once.

Learn in Bite-Size Chunks

I recommend studying one unit at a time. Each unit is different in length and complexity.

Studying a unit includes:

  • A video with learning concepts for each topic
  • A follow-along segment within the same video where I demo the learnings in Salesforce
  • A PDF Workbook for download, covering all units and to use to take notes
  • Time to practice on your own*
  • Time to study additional resource materials provided

*If you would like to practice the exact same steps, I recommend creating a new Playground to avoid duplication issues. Or use your own Developer Org and practice without guidance to gain more confidence.

It’s easy to get lost amongst all that information that is available out there. In this second of my eight-part certification guide, I will take you through the steps where you should get started, what you need to set up your learning environment and where to find the learning topics you need to focus on.

Where Should You Get Started

Sign-up for Trailhead

If you are new to Salesforce, the first step on your way to becoming a Salesforce Certified Professional is to sign up for Trailhead. This is Salesforce’s very own learning platform with a lot of free content. Of course, creating an Account on Trailhead is optional, but comes with great benefits.

Watch this video on how to “Get Started with Trailhead

Get Access to Free Salesforce Practice Orgs

Trailhead does provide you with free Salesforce logins, so called “Playgrounds”, to practice the skills you are learning about hands-on. And most importantly, you can earn points and badges throughout these hands-on exercises. Apart from Playgrounds, you can also sign up for a personal Salesforce Developer Org, which can be connected to your Trailhead account.

Create Your Salesforce Knowledge Trailblazer Profile

The points and badges you can earn on Trailhead are accumulated on your so called Trailblazer Profile which is generated with your Trailhead Account. Your Trailblazer Profile is a modern way of building a knowledge curriculum that you can share on your personal CV or LinkedIn Profile.

And once you are certified, your Salesforce Administrator Certification and other certifications you may acquire over time will be displayed on your Trailblazer Profile right at the top. So you will have all your Salesforce certifications and topic specific badges in one place!

What Topics You Need To Learn

Study The Salesforce Administrator Exam Guide

With so much free content on the Trailhead platform, however, it can be quite overwhelming to find out where to start.

So your next step is to identify the learning objectives for your certification. Salesforce has put together a baseline Salesforce Administrator Certification Exam Guide including all the exam objectives you will be tested on. This exam guide is provided to you on Trailhead.

WeLearnSalesforce - Study The Salesforce Certified Administrator Exam Guide
Source: https://trailhead.salesforce.com/help?article=Salesforce-Certified-Administrator-Exam-Guide

You don’t need a Trailhead Account in order to access the exam guide. You do however need an account if you want to do the hands-on exercises. And since hands-on practice is the most important part of your learning journey, I highly recommend signing up for a Trailhead Account.

The Exam Guide contains details about the scope of the exam such as a number of questions, passing score, allotted time, exam fee and retake fee. And you will find the Exam Outline with all knowledge areas and specific topics that will be covered in the exam.

Each knowledge area is associated with a percentage that indicates the importance of each knowledge area. This means, knowledge areas with a higher percentage are more complex and will therefore come with more questions in the exam.

Get Familiar with the Salesforce Classic and the Salesforce Lightning Experience User Interfaces

Salesforce comes with two different user interfaces, the original Salesforce Classic and the newer Salesforce Lightning Experience. The exam objectives are not interface specific. It’s about understanding the concepts. Both interfaces use similar Setup items, some of them simply looking different. I have been using both extensively and can tell the difference quite well. Saying that some Classic features have not or will not get migrated into Lightning Experience and vice versa. So for some items, you will need to switch between the interfaces.

Since Salesforce is focussing its efforts more and more on the Lightning Experience Integration, it’s enforcing the use of Lighting Experience accordingly. This means it’s best to start learning or moving your learnings to Lightning Experience but get familiar with the Classic Interface too.

Study the latest Salesforce Release Notes

Be aware that Salesforce has three release cycles per year, Winter, Spring and Summer, based on the northern hemisphere. Each release comes with new features that a Salesforce Administrator should be familiar with. The Exam Guide will indicate which release cycle you are currently on. So at the time that you are about to register for the exam, check the release cycle and make sure you have studied the relevant Release Notes as well.

Focussing on the right topics you need to study, not only helps you succeed in the exam.  You gain the knowledge of the core features and functionalities to leverage the capabilities of the Salesforce platform in a smarter way.

In the next article, I want to share with you what a good learning environment looks like and how you get through all the learning topics in a structured way without loosing sight of your learning progress.

Getting a Salesforce Certification is an exciting quest. Salesforce is not only a very powerful platform but also provides an amazing network of knowledge resources and support.

Sometimes I want to be part of it just for the sake of it because it’s a lot of fun. But we only have so much time at our hands, right? Let’s focus on the nitty-gritty bits to get you on your way.

In this first of my eight-part certification guide, let’s look at the reasoning why a Salesforce Certification is great to have, how to identify which certification path is right for you and how you shine the light on yourself amongst all the competition.

Why should you get a Salesforce Certification?

Salesforce Job Roles are in High Demand

Salesforce Customers require a new IT expertise to integrate the Salesforce platform with their business processes. This means that Salesforce is the #1 most sought-after IT skill that companies and their recruiters are currently looking for.

Prove You Have the Skills

Acquiring a Salesforce Certification gives you a chance to prove that you have the skills. The Salesforce Certification Exams are tough and that’s for a very good reason. With the Salesforce platform being very complex, studying in a structured way is essential to your learning success. Studying for a certification helps you focus on the right learning areas.

Improve Your Productivity

You not only improve your own skillset. With your solid Salesforce knowledge you help organizations implement effective processes which in return can save time and money. Understand Business Relevance

Learning the technical components of the Salesforce platform is important but only one side of the game. It’s also very important to understand why Salesforce should be implemented and how it can make an existing business process better.

Each company works differently and there are many ways to set up a Salesforce Org. So the most important part of a successful integration of Salesforce is to align it with the business’ very specific daily processes.

Therefore, make yourself familiar with business use cases of different types of companies. Salesforce has a great page on Salesforce Customer Success Stories where you can read about the type of industry, the Salesforce product that was implemented and why the customer chose Salesforce as the solution and how it helped them become more successful.

Bring Business Use Cases Into Context With Salesforce Features

It’s good to know about other customers’ stories, but you still need to put one and one together. Me and my team have created a Salesforce Online Video Learning Platform WeLearnSalesforce for this exact purpose. Our Salesforce Administrator Courses bring both worlds together. We teach you the technical side in combination with relevant business use cases and how they are being set up in Salesforce to make them work.

Building a solid foundation of Salesforce knowledge and skills will be essential to your success in the Salesforce ecosystem.

Gone Fishing – For A Yummy Salesforce Training

Finding a Salesforce Training Course that suits your learning style, is like going fishing and having the right bait. Let us help you on your fishing expedition.

Author: Peggy Schael | Salesforce Trainer | WeLearnSalesforce

Finding a Salesforce Training Course that suits your learning style, is like going fishing and having the right bait.

Let us help you on your fishing expedition. Are you a System Administrator, Developer, Consultant, Business User or Job Seeker who wants to learn about the core principles and features of the Salesforce platform? Then you have made your catch.

Welcome to the WeLearnSalesforce Video Learning Platform. It’s the perfect place to learn Salesforce at your convenience in your own time. Everyone has a different learning style and we believe that our courses hold something for everyone. We want to make learning Salesforce easier and more accessible.

I had to go “fishing” for a Salesforce Class myself back when I started learning Salesforce. After self-teaching myself for a while I realized I’m missing the big picture and what else Salesforce is capable of. However, finding a reputable training provider wasn’t as easy as I thought. I was lucky that the company I was working for sent me to a class offered by the Salesforce University (now Trailhead Academy). I even became a Certified Salesforce Instructor myself. Read about what it means jumping into ice-cold water to explore new career opportunities in my previous article (while we are on the topic of fishing and water).

Not everyone has a chance to attend classroom-based training. Most of you will therefore get started on Trailhead, Salesforce’s free learning platform. However, it’s mostly text-based and it contains so much information that you can easily get lost like a fish in a big pond.

Therefore, our WeLearnSalesforce Video Courses are an extension of a classroom-based learning experience. Being fully online and on-demand. You can access our video courses at any time from any device you have at home or at work or elsewhere, as long as it has an internet connection and an internet browser.

And what makes our Salesforce Video Courses so yummy, you may ask? Well, the juice of our courses lies in the methods we know make Salesforce learning successful. These methods consist of the main pillars of Learning Concepts combined with related Business Use Cases plus and most importantly Hands-on Practice. And all of this in one place.

From my own learning experience plus teaching thousands of students, I know how important a logical structure and guidance along the way is. Each of our Salesforce courses follows an end-to-end approach, meaning each learning unit builds up knowledge towards the next unit. So you are learning step-by-step in bite-size junks.

Each unit starts with the learning concepts which contain diagrams, flow charts, checklists and best practices. The theory is nice but useless if you don’t know how this fits in with requests or problems a company is trying to solve with the help of Salesforce. It’s like going fishing without using any bait.

So, we’re adding loads of business use cases to put the technical functionality of Salesforce into a business-specific context. This will help you make the connection between business needs and how to leverage the potential of the Salesforce Platform.

The learning concepts have been collated into PDF Workbooks for you to download and use to make notes. You can even take them to work and use the pages as cheat-sheets. You can’t possibly remember everything right? Neither can I, so it’s important to have some checklists or guides at hand, that I want to share with you.

WeLearnSalesforce - Salesforce Administrator Certification - PDF Workbook
WeLearnSalesforce – Salesforce Administrator Certification – PDF Workbook

And you know what makes all this learning even more successful? Any guesses? Right, hands-on practice. Your expertise is only as good as your practice. You will hear me say this a lot. Get your hands on the system!

This means the things we discuss throughout the learning concept, I will then demo for you in Salesforce. And while I demo, you can already follow along in your own Salesforce login, so you can get started with your hands-on practice right away. And after the demo, you will have plenty of opportunities to practice on your own.

And you know what is really exciting? The hands-on exercises are done on the popular Trailhead platform. Trailhead is Salesforce’s own learning platform with text-based learning units which contain thousands of awesome exercises so you can practice as much as you like. And while you exercise, you collect points and badges which are collated on your so-called Trailblazer Profile. The Trailblazer Profile will even hold your Salesforce Certifications once you passed the exams. You can then easily add a link to your Trailblazer Profile to your CV or share on LinkedIn or elsewhere.

Let me show you how to get started with Trailhead in our Free Salesforce Introduction Course.

Learning is a journey. Trust the process. Do your own research and just get started.

Stepping into icy waters as a Salesforce Trainer

From getting a job as a Salesforce Project Manager without any clue about Salesforce to becoming a full-time Salesforce Trainer that I never wanted to be. Salesforce literally turned my career upside down and I’m loving it.

From getting a job as a Salesforce Project Manager without any clue about the Salesforce platform to becoming a full-time Salesforce Trainer that I never wanted to be. Salesforce literally turned my career upside down and I’m loving it. Read more about my career change in the previous article.

As part of my new career as a full-time Salesforce Trainer and Training Consultant, I had to get certified by the one and only Salesforce University (now Trailhead Academy). This was the requirement to be eligible to deliver their official Salesforce courses.

What a ride. Before even daring to sign up for the instructor program, I had to get the Salesforce Administrator Certification first. I re-discovered the materials from the Salesforce Administration Essentials Course (ADM201/ADX201) I had attended about six months back and studied everything pretty much from scratch again. The Trailhead e-learning platform didn’t even exist back then.

I signed up for my very first Salesforce Developer Org so I could practice what I was learning. When I eventually took the exam, the learning materials and hands-on practice totally paid off. I passed at the first attempt. As I know now, most students fail their first attempt. Was I lucky? No. I studied real hard and practiced a lot.

I was proud and ready to sign up for the Salesforce Instructor Program. What did that mean? It’s one thing to know the technical side of the Salesforce platform but it’s another thing to being able to teach others. It was a steep and tough learning curve, however I came out an official Salesforce Certified Instructor. I was now eligible to deliver the official ‘Salesforce Administration Essentials for New Admins’ (ADM201/ADX201) course.

The first class I taught as a Salesforce Certified Instructor was super tough. I had to take everything I practiced from the safety of my co-instructor team into a real-life classroom. So tough so, I considered quitting my job. Right there. Of course, I’m no quitter. As I walked into my second classroom the week after, I felt much more prepared because of what I learned from that first week of teaching and couldn’t actually wait to get started.

Five years fast-forward, I got also certified for the ‘Administration Essentials for Experienced Admins’ (ADM211/ADX211) and the ‘Implementing a Reporting Strategy’ (STR301) courses. These essential instructor certifications allowed me to teach a total of over 50 Salesforce classes. Watch the introductory video on my profile page.

Salesforce Courses serve different purposes for different people. Everyone brings a different skill set, from a different job role and a different learning goal. You might just want to fill some knowledge and skill gaps, like I did in my early Salesforce days, or maybe even prepare for the Salesforce Administrator Certification exam.

Whichever it is for you, it’s all about gaining the right skill set for the career you are looking to build. There are Salesforce courses for everyone. So go get it.

In the next article, I will tell you all about how I am extending access to my Salesforce knowledge with our WeLearnSalesforce Online Video Courses. Making learning Salesforce easier and more accessible.

How Salesforce turned my career upside down (for the better)

I seriously had no clue what I was getting myself into. I was super nervous. But if you don’t try, you will never find out, right. So much about “I never wanted to become a trainer”. All the hesitations, doubts, excuses eventually led to the best career change of my life.

Author: Peggy Schael | Salesforce Trainer | WeLearnSalesforce

I had a great job as a Salesforce Project Manager that included Salesforce in-house trainings with the sales teams. Read about how I actually never wanted to become a Salesforce Trainer in my previous article.

A few months after I had attended my first ever Salesforce Administration Essentials training and provided in-house trainings, I realized that I’m enjoying it so much that I could see myself doing Salesforce trainings full-time. And it wasn’t just about the joy of teaching, it was also the fact that there was never enough time to run more substantial Salesforce training sessions.

One day, my partner asked me, whether I could see myself becoming a full-time Salesforce Trainer since I had been enjoying that part of my job quite a lot. You should have seen my face. ‘Of course not!’ was my answer.

Appears, I like turning down ideas that I eventually actually like.

And so, the seed had been planted and I did start thinking about a possible career change. I looked back at the week of the Salesforce Administration Essentials training I had attended as a student. I tried to put myself into the shoes of that Salesforce Trainer.

I decided to reach out to that instructor and asked for a catch-up so I can understand better, what a job as a Salesforce trainer entails. He agreed to meet and very patiently answered my thousand or more questions over a period of two hours. Poor guy! That was his after-class time, after he’d already been talking all day. Well, it was all worth the time, at least for me. It took another few months when he contacted me about a job opening.

Phew, I decided to apply and got a job interview. I did indeed get an offering and guess what, I took the job. I said ‘Yes’, for the biggest change in my career.

I seriously had no clue what I was getting myself into. I was super nervous. But if you don’t try, you will never find out, right. So much about “I never wanted to become a trainer”. All the hesitations, doubts, excuses eventually led to the best career change of my life.

Read on in my next article what my life as a Training Consultant and Trailhead Academy Certified Salesforce Instructor looked like.

In the meantime, try out something new. You never know where it will lead you to.

How I stumbled upon Salesforce

After a few job applications, I got invited to a job interview which looked very promising. It was about a role as a Salesforce Project Manager. Wait! Salesforce what? I had never heard of Salesforce before.

Author: Peggy Schael | Salesforce Trainer | WeLearnSalesforce

Let’s go back in history where it all started. In 2013 me and my partner had moved back to our beloved Sydney in Australia, starting a new phase of our lives. We found a very nice apartment near the famous Bondi Beach. So far so good.

Now it was about finding a new job. We all know when you move to a new city or even a new country, it can be quite tough to get a foot into the door.

Well, I guess I was lucky that I had lived and worked in Australia before, plus I had already built up a few years of work experience.

After a few job applications, I got invited to a job interview which looked very promising. It was about a role as a Salesforce Project Manager. Wait! Salesforce what? I had never heard of Salesforce before. So I gathered as much information about Salesforce as I could pretty much in the one day before I headed into that job interview.

The interviewers noticed that I didn’t know much about Salesforce but they were looking at the overall skill set. It wasn’t just about knowing a particular topic, or in this case a cloud-based CRM platform called Salesforce. It was about being able to learn new things, connecting the dots and proving the right work attitude. I got the job and that was the start of my Salesforce career journey.

My manager at the time introduced me to the Salesforce Cloud Platform and showed me the ropes and business use cases of what it was used for at the company I just started working for. I thought Salesforce was very intuitive and easy to understand. Great! From then it was learning on the job and self-teaching. Of course, that wasn’t sufficient to fully understand what the Salesforce platform was capable of. As I realized later. But let me tell you more about that in my following blog posts.
